MUSG announces Fall Election Results

MILWAUKEE (Sept. 5, 2013) – Marquette University Student Government announced Thursday the residential senators for the 2015-16 school year.

Students voted this online week for their respective hall or apartment candidates. MUSG Elections Coordinator Grace Kinnaman shared the results at a press conference on September 18, 2015.

Residential Senate Final Election Results:
Abbotsford Hall: Allie Bitz
Cobeen Hall: Erica Jackson
Commuter: Mohamed Abdelrahim
Humphrey Hall: John Eckert
McCormick Hall: Phil Parisi and Meredith Gillspie
O’Donnell Hall: Blake Hartman
Schroeder Hall: Michelle Diaz and J. Gabriel Lopez-Rivera
Straz Tower: Luis Herrera
Off-Campus: Courtney Guc, Clayton Keefe, Michaela Bear

Both the Carpenter Tower seat and the Mashuda Hall seat were not filled due to an absence in registered candidates. Their respective Community Programming Councils will fill in those seats. The Legislative Vice President, in accordance with the MUSG Constitution, will appoint these positions.

These elections saw a low voter turnout of 10%.  This is the lowest turn out MUSG has seen since the fall of 2008 when the turn out was 8.9%. Elections Coordinator Grace Kinnaman commented, “While I am disappointed about the low voter turn out, I am positive that the elected candidates will provide excellent representation of their constituents.”

Looking to the future, Kinnaman set her sights high for the 2016 spring election, “As a team we will be working hard to increase voter turnout to our goal of 30%.”

Some responsibilities of a residential senator include working with their respective hall councils as well as in conjunction with the Residence Hall Association (RHA).  Newly elected senators will participate in a training session on Thursday, September 21 where they will learn proper procedures for senate meetings. The first official meeting with the complete senate will take place on Thursday, September 28.
