#MUMania 2014 to celebrate start of academic year at Marquette

Marquette University Student Government will welcome incoming and returning students to campus with an event-packed, fun-stacked week that can only be tracked by a hashtag. #MUMania, MUSG’s annual week of events, concerts and more, will begin on Monday, August 25 and conclude on Saturday, August 30.

On Monday, August 25, #MUMania 2014 will get rolling with a pedal tavern serving up delicious root beer floats. Students can stop by Westowne Square from 1-4 p.m. for a cool, summer treat celebrating the start of a great year at Marquette.

Tuesday, August 26, marks the first Student Showcase of the year at 7 p.m. in the Weasler Auditorium. Featuring performances by The Naturals, The Meladies, Capoeira Nago Marquette, Mazaa Dance, Hype Dance, Dance Inc., Pure Dance Marquette and West Coast Swing Dance Group, the talents of Marquette students are sure to spice up the second day of classes. If that we're enough, MU Women's Basketball Coach Carolyn Kieger will emcee the whole night.

On Wednesday, #MUMania takes a page from the SoulPancake playbook with its very own Ball Pit Stop. Students are invited to take a seat and make a friend at this ballin’ event in Westowne Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thursday starts the first of three double feature #MUMania days. Students interested in joining a student organization or sport should come by O-Fest from 4-7 p.m. in Central Mall. All of Marquette’s 250+ student groups will be present. And if getting involved makes you hungry, stop by one of the many food trucks parked around Central Mall. Food trucks tickets can be purchased for $2 at the MUSG table.

Then, join in on a #MUMania tradition – a movie under the stars! Get to the center of campus early to save your sport on the grass for Edge of Tomorrow and treat yourself to some popcorn. Edge of Tomorrow is the first movie in MUSG’s free film series, playing every Friday and Saturday at the Varsity Theatre.

Friday’s Unplugged BBQ in Westowne Square will welcome the first musical acts of the year – Hollow & Akimbo and The Lonely Biscuits. From 5-8 p.m., students will enjoy the musical stylings of two unique groups and a delicious spread of BBQ foods, including walking tacos, mini corn dogs and mocktails.

After some music and mocktails, students can head over to Marquette Place at 8 p.m. for Residence Hall Association’s first event of the year – the aMUzing Race. While exploring the Milwaukee’s different neighborhoods, students will compete against other residence hall teams to win the largest scavenger hunt on campus.

While an end to #MUMania may make some bitter, Saturday’s Custard Crawl will make the conclusion at least bittersweet. Get a taste of Milwaukee’s sixth food group at the area’s three favorite custard locations – Kopp’s, Leon’s and Gille’s. Wristbands will be available for free pick-up in the CLSI beginning Monday, August 25. Tour busses will leave at 7 p.m. from the Annex on 16th and Wells.

Of course, #MUMania wouldn’t be complete without a Late Night event. Join MUSG and Late Night Marquette for a Mania Week finale at the Annex. From 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., students will enjoy all the amenities the Annex has to offer for free! Bowling, roller skating on the sport court, wings, trivia and pop quiz will all be had at this epic ending to #MUMania 2014.
