MILWAUKEE (Oct. 11, 2013) – On Thursday, Oct. 10, Marquette University Student Government convened for a senate meeting with a presentation, reports and passing of legislation. Senate welcomed Zack Henderson, campus coordinator for Teach for America, to present to on the organization’s mission. Teach for America is a two-year AmeriCorps program where college graduates receive training and become teachers in low-income school districts for a two-year period. Henderson encouraged senators to fill out the non-binding application in order to participate in a rewarding, educational and unforgettable experience.
President Sam Schultz spoke about MUSG’s advocacy to include a student on the Presidential Search Committee and the Executive Board’s conversations with members of the Board of Trustees. On Oct. 11, Schultz wrote a letter to the student body that was published in the Marquette Tribune that expressed MUSG’s involvement.
Following Schultz’s report, Executive Vice President Zach Bowman announced that MUSG will be conducting a student survey on gender and sexuality in the coming weeks. MUSG Senators will be walking around campus to issue this survey on iPods soon.
Senate then organized to vote on two different pieces of legislation. First on the table was Amendment #4, titled, “Requiring the Recording of Each Senator’s Vote.” Authored by Senators Walker and McCarthy, the amendment prohibits the use of secret ballot voting unless constitutionally mandated and requires that each Senator’s vote be recorded by the legislative clerk, with the ultimate goal of adding transparency into the voting processes of Senate. After much debate, Amendment #4 passed with a vote of 27-1-1. Senate votes will now appear in copies of each meeting’s minutes, which can be found on the MUSG website.
Senate then discussed Resolution #2, “Reserve Fund Reallocation for the Purchase of Computers.” CVP Lahr and LVP Whelton authored the piece, requesting that MUSG reallocate $1,739 from the MUSG Reserve Fund into the technology budget line for the purchase of new office computers including a new laptop for Senate and upgraded iMacs for the Communications Department. Resolution #2 passed with a vote of 28-0-1.
At the conclusion of the meeting, MUSG Senators threw Senate Advisor Kate Trevey, Assistant Dean for Leadership and Vocation Programs, a surprise baby shower.
